Poem
Much madness is divinest sense
To a discerning eye; Much sense the starkest madness. ’T is the majority In this, as all, prevails. Assent, and you are sane; Demur,—you ’re straightway dangerous, And handled with a chain. |
Short Story
|
Current Event.
In the Newtown, Connecticut school massacre suggest that the alleged shooter, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, may have suffered from autism or a personality disorder and also had easy access to high-powered weapons – a combination of unique circumstances that may complicate President Obama's call for broad "meaningful action" in the wake of a national tragedy.

.Chapter 2:
"There only remained a resolution to return to my ancient studies, and to devote myself to a science for which I believed myself to possess a natural talent." (33)
Chapter 4:
"Who shall conceive the horrors of my secret toil, as I dabbled among the unhallowed clumps of the grave, or tortured the living animal to animate the lifeless clay?" (40)

" 'Do not ask me,' cried I, putting my hands before my eyes, for I thought I saw the dreaded spectre glide into the room; 'he can tell. Oh, save me, save me!' " (47)
Chapter 6:
"My own spirits were high, and I bounded along with feelings of unbridled joy and hilarity" (57)
Chapter 7:
"The picture appeared a vast and dim scene of evil, and I foresaw obscurely that I was destined to become the most wretched of human beings," (61)
Chapter 9:
"I shunned the face of man; all sound of joy or complacency was torture to me; solitude was my only consolation-deep, dark, deathlike solitude" (77)
Chapter 10:
:But I scarcely observed this; rage and hatred had at first deprived me of utterance, and I recovered only to overwhelm him with words expressive of furious detestation and contempt" (86)
Chapter 16:
"Cursed, cursed creator! Why did I live?" (124)
Chapter 17:
"You must create a female for me, with whom I can live in the interchange of those sympathies necessary for my being." (133)
Chapter 18:
"Alas! To me the idea of an immediate union with my Elizabeth was one of horror and dismay." (140)
Chapter 19:
"When these thoughts possessed me, I would not quit Henry for a moment, but followed him as his shadow, to protect him from the fancied rage of his destroyer." (150)
Chapter 20:
"Even if they were the leave Europe, and inhabit the deserts of the new world, yet one of the first results of those sympathies for which the daemon thirsted would be children, and a race of devils would be propagated upon the earth who might make the very existence of the species of man a condition precarious and full of terror" (153)
Chapter 21:
"The human frame could no longer support the agonies that I endured, and I was carried out of the room in strong convulsions" (164)
Chapter 22:
" 'I am not mad,' I cried energetically; 'the sun and heavens, who have viewed my operations, can bear witness of my truth. I am the assassin of those most innocent victims; they died by my machinations." (173)
Chapter 23:
"As I heard it, the whole truth rushed into my mind, my arms dropped, the motion of every muscle and fibre was suspended; I could feel the blood trickling in my veins and tingling in my extremities of my limbs" (183)
Chapter 24:
"I was hurried away by fury; revenge alone endowed my with strength and composure; it moulded my feelings, and allowed me to be calculating and calm, at periods when otherwise delirium or death would have been my portion" (189)
